The Masks are a series of their own within Identity Series. This sub-series explores meanings we interpret from gestures and body language, focusing specifically on the language of the face. Using a variety of mediums, Selena combines fundamental visual components to mimic and reference gestures, mannerisms, and emotions. By manipulating facial figurative elements, her work describes the subtleties involved in observing and/or communicating via one’s face, even and perhaps especially through social media. Social constructions (gender, ethnicity, species) are abstracted or removed to better observe and celebrate other nuances of gestural communication. In doing so, the emotions and conversations in her work are expressed through a more universal language.
