Through a series of illustrations and plaster relief forms, Selena slowly explores ideas of captivity and space. Artworks from this series are a mixture of abstract and creature-like forms. They possess a dark and cynical energy. The tension created between the figure and the parameters of its 2D or relief environment is meant to emphasize their ‘containment’, and not in friendly terms.
Illustrations:
The process of creating the figures in the illustrated artworks of this series, although beginning with a free and expressive pencil gesture drawing, was exceedingly time consuming, repetitive, and laden with self-imposed rules. Every shape was created by the intersecting pen lines of the original gesture drawing, and was filled with more lines which created a sense of depth. The end result was not predictable, as each shape’s linear density was decided in relationship to the last shape filled—every decision informed the next action and acted as a metaphor for living and growing beings.
Relief sculptures:
In conjunction with the illustrations, Selena experimented in creating relief sculptures that explore gesture while using a much less strict and more organic processes of making. She experiments with casting figurative forms in her studio.
