Identity Series explores meanings we interpret from gestures and body language. Using a variety of mediums, Selena combines fundamental visual components to mimic and reference gestures, mannerisms, and emotions. Within this series, much of Selena’s subject matter comes from selfies sent between her and other individuals via social media and digital chats. By manipulating figurative elements, her work describes the subtleties involved in observing and/or communicating via the body, even and perhaps especially through social media. Social constructions (gender, ethnicity, species) are abstracted or removed to better observe and celebrate other nuances of gestural communication. In doing so, the emotions and conversations in her work are expressed through a more universal language.
