Identity Series: The Community

The Community is a large, 3D component of Identity Series. Diving further into the tactile world of artmaking, this sculpture focuses on faces and presenting a grouping of gestures. Using a variety of 3D mediums, Selena combines fundamental visual components to mimic and reference gestures, mannerisms, and emotions expressed through the face. By manipulating facial figurative elements, her work describes the subtleties involved in observing and/or communicating via one’s face, and the larger interpretations and context experienced when seen within a group. Social constructions (gender, ethnicity, species) are abstracted or removed to better observe and celebrate other nuances of gestural communication. In doing so, the emotions and conversations in her work are expressed through a more universal language.
